Terms of Engagement:

Attendance in Court or Conference. To include, and in addition, time spent in preparation. This includes reading documents, research, correspondence, and discussion with lawyers. It also includes any travel / accommodation required.
Preparation of Report. This not only includes the time spent on clinical examination and the preparation of the report but also the time spent on reading all the records, essential research, correspondence and discussion with lawyers.
Late Cancellation. Late cancellation often renders me unavailable for alternative employment. A fee is therefore is sometimes charged. This is at the full rate, plus time already spent in preparation, for cancellations less than two weeks. For cancellation between two and six weeks the fee is 50% of the normal day rate plus time already spent in preparation.
Travel Time. Travel time, which includes time for sustenance, is charged at 50% the normal hourly rate.
Medline Searches. Copies of articles are provided when required at cost. This is £11.50 + VAT per article.
Clinical Negligence Screening. These are performed and charged according to individual requirements. In practice there is often no charge in cases that are subsequently offered to Professor Barnes for full investigation.
Fees. Fees are normally paid within 60 days unless alternative arrangements are made in advance. Late payments are liable to interest being added without further notice at 10% p.a. Fees are not subject to taxation.
